- Bicycle riders will draft each other to save energy. A key strategy in dealing with ALS is conserving my energy for what is important.
- I used a drafting table in my early years of circuit board design. Dealing with ALS requires innovation, imagination, persistence, and engineering skills to keep coming up with solutions that allow me to be comfortable and active.
- When I learned how to sail, I quickly learned that if you can't read a navigation chart and don't know the draft of your sailboat, you can run aground. ALS puts a lot of obstacles in my path. The help I receive from our local chapter of the ALS Assocication helps me anticipate and avoid a lot of stressors that come with ALS.
I was diagnosed with ALS in November 2014. We created the Drafters team for the 2015 Ride to Defeat ALS and I rode the 25 mile route. I have ridden every year since to raise money for this worthy organization.
In 2016 I rode a trike with an electric assist motor loaned to me by Susannah Lints. Her husband, Rasjad Lints, enjoyed riding this bike before his death in early 2016 from ALS. It was an honor to ride his bike and to meet Susannah right after I crossed the finish line.
In 2017 and 2018 we were even stronger with the addition of some members of Rasjad Lint’s team, A Life Beyond Measure. Susannah Lints suggested that we join forces and we were excited to welcome her friends who helped Rasjad enjoy riding even while he fought ALS.
Now it's 2019 and we are inviting members of the Portland Bicycle Club to join us and make us an even stronger force in the fight against ALS.
With your help, we will be able to make a difference in the lives of people affected by this disease and their families. Please consider joining us as my Drafters ride around Mt. Angel, Oregon, and/or by donating to one of our team members. Our team members are listed in the table at the bottom of this page. Click on their names to read why this cause is so important to them.
We encourage you to share this page with your friends, family, neighbors and coworkers. We would love their help! This is an exciting opportunity for us to work together to support those affected by Lou Gehrig's Disease and to spread awareness of the urgency to find treatments and a cure.
Can you help Drafters reach our Ride to Defeat ALS fundraising goal?
