I have now been living with ALS for over 10 years. That is 10 years of getting weaker and more tired every day. 10 years of losing motor function and losing the ability to do simple things like feed myself. 10 years of giving up things I love doing, like woodworking, hiking, camping, and playing hockey.
I am one of the lucky ones though. For most people diagnosed with ALS, the terrible disease has an average 2-5 year course, and always results in death. There is no real treatment and no cure. For people living with ALS , life is terribly difficult, and it is also terribly difficult for their friends and families. Life with ALS requires 24 hour caregiving for most people with the disease, and requires enormous sacrifice from family and friends. I am lucky to have an amazing support network from my family, but we still pay for caregivers to come 5 days a week. I am also very lucky to have the support from the ALS Association. The ALS Association provides support for people with ALS all over the world. From support groups to advice, and helping cover the costs of caregiving, and funding research to find treatment and a cure, all of which is funded through donations.
Every year, my family and friends participate in the Walk To Defeat ALS to help raise funds to support people living with ALS. Please help in any way you can. You can make a donation, and/or join our team and raise funds yourself. Thank you so much for your support.
